How to compare diamond & jewellery prices

The 4Cs matter more than the name on the box

Carat, cut, colour, and clarity determine a diamond's price far more than which retailer is selling it. Two rings that look similar in a photo can have genuinely different value once you compare the actual 4C specifications listed — always check these figures before comparing price tags.

UK hallmarking is a real legal safeguard

In the UK, gold, silver, platinum, and palladium items over a certain weight are legally required to carry an independent hallmark from one of the UK's Assay Offices. It's a genuine protection worth checking for — a hallmark confirms the metal content has been independently verified, not just claimed by the seller.

Independent jewellers vs. big names

A well-established independent jeweller often prices comparable pieces very differently from a large national retailer — sometimes cheaper, sometimes not. Neither is inherently the better deal; the only way to know is to check the same or a similar piece across several retailers at once.

The practical fix

Searching once across multiple UK jewellers and marketplaces together — sorted by price — is the fastest way to see the real spread on a piece, instead of opening ten separate retailer sites one at a time.
